Do Minh Quan set up a semi-final clash with seventh seed Andrean Raturandang, of Indonesia, at the Tanimex tournament in HCM City after comfortably beating Laos’ Vithaya Rasavady 6-2, 6-1 on Friday.

At the Tanimex Club in Tan Binh District, the top seed and defending champion began well by breaking his opponent’s service twice.

The Lao broke back in the third and seventh games, but Quan returned the compliment in the eighth to win the set.

The second set was easier for the Vietnamese number one, with Rasavady, who lost 7-6, 6-1 to Quan in Thailand two weeks ago, making too many unforced errors to surrender tamely.

“Rasavady played quite well; his forehand is good but backhand still lacks precision,” Quan said after the match.

He comes up against the in-form seventh seed Raturandang, who scored a convincing victory over third seed and last year’s runner-up Yew Ming Si of Malaysia.

“I have never played him before, but I know Quan is a good player and I’ll try my best,” said the former Indonesian number one, who won a tournament 10 years ago at the city’s Lan Anh Club.

“I do not think too much about whether I will win the title, I just take it match by match,” he added.

In another quarter-final, Ngo Quang Huy scored an unexpected and thrilling 7-5, 7-5 win over second seeded Indonesian Hendri Susilo Pramono.

“It is unbelievable. I never thought I’ll beat Hendri Susilo Pramono. His level is higher than mine, and he even won the Indonesian championship,” Huy said after the match.

“I did not play well today, I did not hit consistently. He served well today. I just had no luck today,” Pramono said.

He added he would come back next year for another crack.

In the other semi-final tomorrow, Huy will take on Le Quoc Khanh, who won a hard-fought three-set match against veteran Tran Duc Quynh.
