Long wins bronze at Asian champs; Badminton star makes global top 20; Hoa, Son top Ha Noi tennis tourney

Viet Nam’s leading international player Nguyen Tien Minh has moved from 21st to 19th on the world rankings released by the Badminton World Federation.

Minh became the first Vietnamese badminton player to enter an Olympics when he competed in China.

Minh, who has been striving recently to reach the world top 20, improved his standing at the Asian Badminton Championship in Suwon, South Korea early this month and has 37,000 ranking points.

Minh is seeded No 2 at the the Ciputra Ha Noi-Viet Nam Challenge, which starts today at the Trinh Hoai Duc Gymnasium and has attracted 260 players from around the world.

Following the challenge, Minh will train in Singapore for international tournaments including the Aviva Open Singapore Super Series on June 9-14, the Djarum Indonesia Open Super Series on June 16-21 and the world championship in Hyderabad on August 10-16.

Hoa, Son top Ha Noi tennis tourney

Nguyen Huu Hoa from the Hitech club and Vu Duc Son, from the PetroVietnam Northern Gas Company, won the men’s singles in the U-30 and over 46 age groups respectively at the Ha Noi Tennis Championships which ended on Sunday.

The Hitech club’s Luong Hoang and Ngo Van Dang won the U-30 men’s doubles while the Vinh Tuy club’s Vu Quynh Huong and Pham Kim Lien won the U-35 women’s doubles.

The tournament, organised by Ha Noi Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism in co-ordination with the Ha Noi Tennis Federation, drew 159 players aged 30 to 61 from 50 city clubs for the men’s singles and doubles and women’s doubles.
