In explanation, Quoc said he was forced to do something to take care of his future because the department has not delivered on past promises.

Quoc said department leaders had offered him many things, including land for a house, university tuition fees and other benefits. However, it had been years since those promises were made and he has nothing except for a VND3 million (US$170) salary per month.

Quoc is the only Vietnamese table tennis player with two Olympics under his belt, first in Athens and then Beijing. It is expected that he will have many invitations from other teams as soon as he leaves Khanh Hoa.

Quoc has not said which team he will join, but T&T Ha Noi’s club manager Dang Thanh expressed his excitement upon hearing the news. He said he would like to sign a contract with Quoc when he finishes with Khanh Hoa.

VN to host Asian volleyball champs

Viet Nam will compete against Australia, Iran and Sri Lanka in group A of the 15th Asian Senior Women’s Volleyball Championship to be hosted by Viet Nam on September 5-13.

Following a recent draw, group B will feature Japan, Chinese Taipei, Uzbekistan and Maldives. In group C, Hong Kong will play against China, Kazakhstan and Afghanistan. Thailand will take on South Korea, India and Indonesia in group D.

This is the first time Viet Nam have hosted the event. The tournament will be held at the Gia Lam Gymnasium and Quan Ngua Sports Centre in Ha Noi.

Previously, Viet Nam hosted group B of the World Women’s Volleyball Grand Prix in Vinh Phuc’s Gymnasium last year with teams from Brazil, Turkey, Kazakhstan and Germany.
