Table tennis: Quoc reaches main draw of world champs

LookAtVietnam – Vietnam’s top player Doan Kien Quoc crushed Switzerland’s Mohler Nicola 4-1 in the second preliminary round of the World Table Tennis Championship in Yokohama, Japan, on April 29.

Two-time Olympian Quoc, who is ranked 182nd in the world and renowned for his left-hand smashes, defeated Nicola 11-9, 11-4, 10-12, 12-10, 11-9. He was expected to meet world No 16 Cheung Yuk of Hong Kong in the main draw on April 30.

Quoc and Dinh Quang Linh also beat Parapanov Konstantin and Yordanov Teodor of Bulgaria 3-0 (11-9, 11-9, 11-7) in the men’s doubles and will meet Alexsandr Kuchuk and Pavel Platonou of Belarus in the round of 32.

Quoc’s teammate Hanoian Nguyen Nam Hai is out after losing to Chen Chien An from Chinese Taipei 4-3 in the second preliminary round.

Meanwhile, Linh lost 4-2 to Sangguashin Phuthong of Thailand, who is ranked 233rd in the world.

Linh, a rising star in Vietnam, beat Ergeshow Azama from Kyrgyzstan and Hussein Omar Hussein of Iraq 4-0 in the group competition on April 29.

Despite their exit from the singles’ competition, Linh and Hai fought valiantly to qualify for preliminary second round and will be satisfied with their performances.

The world championship has drawn 318 players, of which 200 players competed in two preliminary rounds for 20 spots in the main draw.
