VietNamNet Bridge – At least 17 athletes at the National Sports Training Centre in Hanoi have suffered from acute diarrhea in the last two weeks.

Most of the athletes were treated at the Vietnam Sports Hospital. Some serious cases, including a pencak silat artist and a Russian freestyle wrestling coach, were transferred to the National Hospital for Tropical and Infectious Diseases.

The National Sports Training Centre’s Zone B was quarantined from May 13-18. In that time, coaches and athletes were allowed to go out but outsiders were banned from going into the zone.

The first case of acute diarrhea at the national sports centre was reported on May 8. After a lunch of tortoise meat, some karate and wrestling athletes caught diarrhea. Several days later, the disease attacked other sportsmen.

On May 11, some individuals in serious condition were moved to the Vietnam Sports Hospital. The sports centre asked the local health agency to check and deliver medicines to all coaches and athletes.

Since May 8, cuisines processed from tortoise, shrimp and cuttle-fish have not been on the menu of athletes in zone B.

The centre’s director Pham Ngoc Vien said on May 18 that there were only four athletes suffering from acute diarrhea.

Health workers decontaminated zone B for the third time on May 18. The quarantine was lifted on May 19.

However, athletes in zone B are still concerned about the disease.
