An annual football tournament for underprivileged children began Wednesday in Ho Chi Minh City with the participation of eight local and international teams.

The teams are from Hanoi and the provinces of Gia Lai, Dong Nai, Dong Thap, and Ca Mau in Vietnam, as well as Cambodia and Thailand.

The Thai team, who along with Cambodia are participating for the first time, beat the HCMC team 4-0. In other matches, Gia Lai defeated Dong Thap 8-1, Dong Nai crushed Ca Mau 7-0, and Hanoi beat Cambodia 5-0.

The eight teams are playing daily at the Military Zone 7 Indoor Stadium in Phu Nhuan District until May 31.

The winners of the tournament will receive VND20 million (US$1,100) while the next three runners-up will be awarded VND15 million, VND10 million, and VND5 million respectively.

Following the tournament, a Vietnamese team will be selected to participate in an upcoming friendly tour to Thailand in September. The team will be chosen by the event’s organizers, the Cong An TPHCM (HCMC Police) and The Thao Viet Nam (Vietnam Sports) newspapers, and the Vietnam Data Communication Company (VDC)-Southern Region.
