This year’s Vietnamese indoor football tournament for underprivileged children wrapped up in Ho Chi Minh City Sunday with Gia Lai beating Dong Nai 4-0 in the final.

The winners displayed better skills and took the trophy as predicted after they defeated the guest team Thailand 8-1 in one of the semifinals on Saturday.

Eight teams – Hanoi, Gia Lai, Dong Nai, HCM City, Dong Thap, Ca Mau, and invitees Cambodia and Thailand – participated in the championship held at the Military Zone 7 Indoor Stadium on May 25.

Gia Lai won all their five encounters, including three group matches. Their opponents in the final, Dong Nai, beat Hanoi 7-2 in Saturday’s semifinal match.

Thailand defeated Hanoi 5-4 to take the third place participating for the first time in the Vietnamese tournament, which was for boys under 15 from SOS villages and charity houses.

Gia Lai pocketed the top prize money of VND20 million (US$1,127), while Dong Nai and Thailand collected VND15 million ($845) and VND10 million ($564) respectively. The Hanoi team took home VND5 million ($282). Gia Lai also won the “fair play” title.

Tournament organizers have selected 10 players from the six participating Vietnamese teams for a squad that will represent the country on a friendly tour to Thailand this September, at the invitation of Thai company Siam Sport. Six Gia Lai boys have been selected for the Vietnam squad.

This year’s contest was organized by newspapers Cong An TPHCM (HCMC Police), The Thao Viet Nam (Vietnam Sports), and Vietnam Data Communication Company (VDC)-Southern Region.

The tournament was first held in 1999 and became an annual event for underprivileged children nationwide. Cambodia and Thailand joined the competition for the first time this year.
