LookAtVietnam – Defender Cao Quang Huong from football giant Military Zone 4 has shocked fans at Hai Phong’s Lach Tray Stadium with his powerful throw-in.

Handy man: Defender Cao Quang Huong from Military Zone 4 shocked fans at Hai Phong’s Lach Tray Stadium last Sunday with his powerful throw-in skills.

Huong’s 50m throw-in four minutes before the final whistle found Moses’ head in the penalty box to assist Tran Son Ha net the ball with an easy shot.

In the last minutes of the game on Sunday thousands of Hai Phong fans held their breath with each of his tosses, as it was the Military team’s second goal resulting from a Huong throw-in during this season’s V-League play.

The 23-year-old defender and his teammates have practised the move many times.

Whenever Huong throws, Moses and Lazaro De Souza place themselves in a strategic spot to try for a header into the net.

Lazaro netted twice using this scenario and has done his part in creating opportunities for other teammates to score.

“I do not know how I make such strong throw-ins. I just practise the skill every day. It may also result from the hard work I did when I was 10,” said Huong.

“I used to be a woodcutter for my poor family when I was a kid. I’m the only child of a six-member family in the mountainous Ky Anh District in central Ha Tinh Province,” the 23-year-old defender explained.

A football player since the age of 12, Huong had to wait until the age of 20, in 2006, to be recruited by Military Zone 4.

Huong soon become one of the team’s key defenders and helped their promotion to the V-League.

Last year in the First Division, Huong’s throws helped his team score nine goals, which is a record for Viet Nam football.

The key defender adds even more power to the team’s defence when he partners with Truong Dinh Luat on the back line, said team coach Vu Quang Bao.

“He is not only good at throw-ins, but he plays aggressively against powerful V-League rivals. Huong does his job well on the defensive line and plays well with other defenders. Sometimes he even threatens opposing keepers with his free kicks,” said Bao.

The talented player also dominates his teammates in arm wrestling matches after training hours.

“Huong is one of the strongest players on the team. He has made good contributions to the team this year and will be one of the toughest defenders in the national league,” said Huong’s teammate Truong Dinh Luat.

“I’m always the loser in our arm wrestling contests. He has such strong biceps. His throws are as strong as kicks. It’s an advantage for beating rivals with unexpected plays,” Luan added.

Military Zone 4, who ranked sixth out of 14 in V-League after Sunday’s game, hope to improve their ranking when they host Khanh Hoa this Sunday.

Huong and his teammates also hope to capitalise on more throw-ins during every game.

The only other V-league player in recent years with the ability to throw the ball up to 40m was Nguyen Van Tien of Song Lam Nghe An, who is now retired.
