Footballers drop two ranks; Tug of War champs in HCM City; Invite for Malaysian volleyball

Footballers drop two ranks

The Vietnamese national football squad dropped two places from the previous month when they were ranked 136 in the world, according to the International Federation of Football Associations’ rankings for last month.

Thailand firmly leads the ranking in Southeast Asia, and is 113th in the world. Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia also dropped in the world.

The Viet Nam Football Federation, the national squad will play a friendly match with Greece’s champions Olympiacos next Thursday before taking on Kuwait on May 31. The result will count towards the country’s world rankings.

Tug of War champs in HCM City

The second National Tug of War Championships open at HCM City’s Nguyen Du Gymnasium on Friady.

The event has attracted 18 women and men’s teams competing in four weight categories – women’s 480kg and 520kg division and 560kg and 600kg for men.

Champions in the women’s 520kg and men’s 600kg will represent Viet Nam in the first ASEAN championships in Singapore next month.

HCM City also host the International Tug of War Tournament — the Calsome Cup.

This event has attracted nearly 50 teams.

Terry Tan, deputy chairman of the Singapore Tug of War Federation, said: “This is a good chance for his team to play and gain more experience in preparation for the ASEAN champs, which Singapore is hosting.”

Invite for Malaysian volleyball

Malaysian national women’s beach volleyballer Beh Shun Thing, who played for Binh Dien Long An in the first round of the Viet Nam Beach Volleyball Championship last month, has received an offer to continue playing for the team.

Shun Thing represented Binh Dien Long An in the first round of the league. The second round kicks off in July.

The Malaysian player won a bronze medal at the 2007 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.
