Dung moves up in tennis world rankings; Indoor athletics complex to open September; Nation wins silver at world dance champs; Anh, Yen recovering from knee operations

Top Vietnamese tennis player Nguyen Thuy Dung has gone up 54 places in the world rankings to 615, according to recently released figures from the International Tennis Federation.

Late April, Dung, who trains at the Florida Tennis Institute, made it to the quarter-finals of the US$50,000 Charlottesville tournament in Virginia.

Indoor athletics complex to open September

The newly constructed Indoor Athletics Complex, which will host many of the events for the third Asian Indoor Games (AIG), will open on National Day on September 2, according to Hoang Vinh Giang, deputy chairman and general secretary of the Viet Nam Olympic Committee.

Construction on the three-storey complex, with 3,110 seats, was completed last year.

Track and field events are included in AIG’s 20 sports held in Viet Nam from October 30 to November 8.

Nation wins silver at world dance champs

Viet Nam’s Nhon Nghia Duong won a silver medal at the ongoing World Lion and Dragon Dance Championship in Shanghai.

The HCM City-based six-member dance troop won their medal for their performance of Nanshi (Unicorn Dance), which they completed in 1 minute 41 seconds – one second behind the winners from Macau.

The Vietnamese troop beat a number of strong contenders, including teams from the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore, and should stand them in good stead for the third Asian Indoor Games, which Viet Nam are hosting in October. Lion and dragon dancing is one of 20 official sports at the AIG.

The World Lion and Dragon Dance Championship ends tomorrow.

Anh, Yen recovering from knee operations

Gold-medal hopefuls in kumite (combat) at the 25th Southeast Asian Games, Vu Thi Nguyet Anh and Nguyen Thi Hai Yen, are recovering from knee operations, said Vu Son Ha, head of karatedo department at the Viet Nam Sports Administration.

Ha said: “The operations on Anh and Yen were to treat their ongoing injuries fully. They can now practise lightly under coach Le Cong’s supervision.”

Anh and Yen will however not compete in the Asian Martial Arts Festival in Bangkok from June 6-14, to which Viet Nam are only sending seven athletes, three of whom are female practitioners of kumite. Among those going will be Bui Thi Trieu, Hoang Thi Xuan Hoa and Bui Thi Ngan, who will be looking to gain competition experience.

However, Anh and Yen are expected to be fully fit for the World Karatedo Championship in Japan in September.
