Quoc, Trang win singles titles at nationals; Hang takes silver at Asian Grand Prix; Liem mates in Manila; HCM City dominates bowling champs

Doan Kien Quoc and Mai Hoang My Trang won the men’s and women’s singles titles at the National Table Tennis Championship, which ended on Saturday in Dac Lac Province.

Quoc of Khanh Hoa beat Tran Tuan Quynh of Ha Noi 4-2 in the final. Ngoc Thuan of the Public Security Ministry and Huy Hoang of Ha Noi shared the bronze.

The all-HCM City women’s final between Trang and Mai Xuan Hang ended in a crushing 4-0 victory for the former champion.

Pham Thi Thien Kim of Tien Giang Province and Nguyen Hong Tam of Ha Noi drew for the bronze.

In the doubles events, the men’s gold went to Ha Noi’s Tuan Quynh and Nam Hai and while My Trang and Xuan Hang of the HCM City won the women’s event.

The mixed doubles title was won by Quoc and Hang.

Hang takes silver at Asian Grand Prix

Asian champion Truong Thanh Hang took silver in the women’s 800m in the first leg of the Asian Athletics Association Grand Prix Series in China on Saturday.

Hang ran clear in the final metres to finish in 2 minutes 4.15 seconds, just behind Matsko Margarita of Kazakhstan.

The HCM City-born athlete will run in the second leg of the Grand Prix tomorrow.

Liem mates in Manila

International Grand Master Le Quang Liem ranked fifth at the Asian Chess Championship in the Philippines on Saturday.

In the last 11th round, Liem, 18, beat host rival So Wesley to get 7.5 points after 11 rounds.

The title went to India’s Ganguly Surya Shekhar. Zhou Weiqi of China was runner-up.

IGM Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son ranked 14th while Dao Thien Hai ranked 18th.

Vietnamese masters are contesting the second Subic International Open in the Philipines.

HCM City dominates bowling champs

HCM City triumphed in seven of eight events in the National Bowling Championship which ended on Sunday at the city’s Sai Gon Superbowl.

The city bowlers won the men’s and women’s singles events as well as the men’s doubles.

They also triumphed in the men’s and women’s team events, as well as men’s master and women’s master events.

The only remaining event which the city dropped was the women’s doubles event which was won by Ha Noi.

Bowlers regularly practice at Sai Gon Superbowl, which is also the venue for bowling events of the third Asian Indoor Games to be held in November.

The six-day competition attracted the participation of 41 bowlers with 12 women from HCM City, Ha Noi and Binh Duong.
