LookAtVietnam – Hoang Anh Tuan won a gold and two silver medals in the men’s 56kg division at the Asian Weightlifting Championships in Taldykorgan City, east of Kazakhstan.

Grunt: Hoang Anh Tuan won a gold and two silver medals at the Asian Weightlifting Championship on Monday.

Tuan won the snatch category in his first international competition after he became the toast of the nation when becoming Viet Nam’s first Olympic medalist in weightlifting when second in the 56kg category last year at Beijing.

This is the fourth time Tuan has got gold in his favourite category in a regional competition. However he could not match his Beijing Olympics mark of 290kg.

Tuan also took two silvers in the clean and jerk and total weight (278kg).

The ace weightlifter has hot performed as well as he did at the last year’s Asian Weightlifting Championships in Japan, where he won two gold medals and a silver to push the country to fourth position.

His latest effort is an impressive achievement considering he began training with local coaches only a few months ago, and does not follow any special training and dietary regime.

Tuan and seven other weightlifters - Nguyen Thi Thiet (63kg), who brought home three silvers in the last Asian championships, Nguyen Manh Thang (62kg), Tran Van Hoa (94kg), Nguyen Thi Hoa (48kg), Duong Thi Bich Tuyen (53kg), Dao Thi Hong Chiem (58kg) and Nguyen Thi Phuong Loan (59kg) - are competing in the eight-day tournament which ends on Sunday.

The nation’s weightlifting squad is targeting two gold medals at the 25th Southeast Asian Games in Laos in December.
