Coach Mai Duc Chung

Vietnam’s premier league defending champions Binh Duong will hire Mai Duc Chung as its head coach till the end of this football season, the club said Sunday.

Chung, who helped earn Vietnam the women’s football championships at the 22nd and 23rd Southeast Asian Games in 2003 and 2005 and helped the U22 men’s team win the Merdeka Cup in Malaysia last year, will replace Portuguese tactician Francois Vital who was fired on April 30 for the club’s poor performance.

Acting coach Nguyen Minh Dung will return to his normal post as assistant coach.

Binh Duong club General Director Tran Van Duong said, “It’s not a surprise that we have chosen Chung. We still want to be among the best clubs in the V-League and the AFC Cup 2009.”

Binh Duong now tops the AFC Cup 2009’s Group H and has a golden chance to make history by becoming the first Vietnamese club to advance to the second round of the tournament by not losing to Valencia of the Maldives on May 19.
