Ban on Hai Phong fans needs rethinking, lawyer says

The Vietnam Football Federationâs ban prohibiting Hai Phong fans from entering stadiums at away matches punishes people who did no wrong, a Hanoi lawyer said. |
âThe hooliganism of some Hai Phong fans has tarnished the image of Vietnamese football,â Hanoi-based AIC Law Office manager and attorney Le Thanh Son told Thanh Nien Saturday. âWe strongly support some tough measures against those fans, but we need to consider these measures.â He was speaking about an indefinite ban issued Friday by the federation (VFF) that prohibits fans from entering Hai Phong away games if they wear clothes with the teamâs symbols or name. He said the interests of the club as a whole needed to be taken into account as well as the interests of âthe well-behaved fans.â He said the reputation of the federation (VFF) and âVietnamese sports in generalâ were on the line. The ban punishes Hai Phong fans that had in fact been behaving themselves, he said. Son said VFF should have consulted experts and lawyers. He urged the body to change its decision and instead fine the club and ask the Hai Phong City Peopleâs Committee to hold a meeting with the club managers, fans and VFF officials. He said the point of the meeting should be to get the club and the fans to promise to prevent all kinds of hooliganism. If trouble continued, Hai Phong could be removed from the V-League, Son suggested. Speaking on the clubâs website, Chairman of the Haiphong Fan Society Vu Tuan Dung said he would file a complaint with VFF as the âdecision is not fair because the fan society doesnât mean to cause trouble. It was all because of a few extreme fans.â Dung also said the society would ask police to find unruly fans and remove them from future games. Reported by Lan Phuong |
