Vietnam’s Becamex Binh Duong club put its name in the Vietnamese football history book on June 23 when it became the first Vietnamese team to enter the quarterfinals of AFC Cup after trouncing Malaysia’s Kedah 8-2 at its home ground Go Dau.

Binh Duong’s players are very happy with their victory.

Host Becamex Binh Duong organised attacks from the start. After missing some opportunities, Helio and Vu Phong scored two goals in the 18th and 19th minutes.

With two goals, Binh Duong played more slowly but it still controlled the match. In the 32nd minute, coach Mai Duc Chung replaced Vu Phong with young striker Duc Thien, who greatly contributed on two goals scored by Huynh Kesley in the 40th and 41st minutes and scored a goal himself after that.

In the second half, Malaysian striker Bimar Statar took advantage of the host’s loss of concentration to score one goal in the 71st minute. Immediately after the Malaysian goal, Huynh Kesley once again received the ball from Duc Thien and put the ball in the goal of Kedah, bringing the score to 5-1.

In the 80th and 84th minutes, strikers Anh Duc and Huynh Kesley scored two more goals for Vietnam. In the last minutes, Adu had a penalty kick to get the second goal for Malaysia. Immediately, Huynh Kesley made another goal, fixing the victory 8-2 for Binh Duong.

Binh Duong’s new coach Mai Duc Chung didn’t impress fans at V-League but he has become the first coach to lead a Vietnamese team to the quarterfinals of AFC Cup.
