Top-placed Da Nang has moved another step toward this year’s V-League championship after taking a 2-0 victory over Hai Phong in the 14th round.

Brazilian Merlo Gaston’s double helped Da Nang firmly secure first place with seven points clear of second-placed Hoang Anh Gia Lai (HAGL).

Gaston put the visitors in the lead after 12 minutes. The scoreline infuriated home fans at Lach Tray Stadium because Brazilian 2002 world cup winner Denilson Olivera who signed a three-month contract on Monday was a just a spectator in the stand.

The home team failed to reply with a goal while Gaston proved effective in Da Nang’s front line with another goal halfway through the second half.

Three draws

Dong Tam Long An (DTLA) was lucky to draw 2-2 with Khanh Hoa at Long An Stadium after being offered a controversial penalty kick two minutes from time because referee Vu Bao Linh ruled that Khanh Hoa’s Tan Dat had tackled Antonio Carlos in the penalty area.

HAGL took the lead against Dong Thap at Cao Lanh Stadium after 32 minutes but the 2003-2004 champions couldn’t hold on to their advantage.

The home team led 2-1 after the 72nd minute with two rapid goals . HAGL was lucky to equalize when Thai midfielder Dasakorn Thonglao scored in stoppage time.

At Thien Truong Stadium, Nam Dinh and defending champions Binh Duong fought to a 1-1 draw.

In other matches, Song Lam Nghe An beat the Fourth Military Zone at Vinh Stadium with Van Quyen’s 16th minute lone goal; and T&T Hanoi defeated The Cong at Hang Day Stadium with the only goal by Cong Vinh.

In an early 14th round match on May 31, HCMC crushed Thanh Hoa 3-0 at Thong Nhat Stadium.
