HCM City kick-boxing tourney attracts more than 20 teams; Quang Nam fined for pitch invasion during 3-0 defeat; HCM City women win at national petanque tournament

A Muay Thai (kick boxing) tournament kicks off in HCM City on July 15-21, ahead of the third Asian Indoor Games in Viet Nam on October 30 to November 8.

The event has attracted martial artists from 20 countries, who will compete in nine weight categories for men and eight for women.

Vietnamese boxers, who are currently training at the Phu Tho Gymnasium, will have their work cut out against martial artists from Thailand, Laos, Iran and Uzbekistan.

Hosts Viet Nam will have three referees at the event – Dang Kim Anh, Cao Van Long, and Nguyen Minh Hoang.

The Asian Indoor Games is a multi-sport event, held every two years.

Quang Nam fined for pitch invasion during 3-0 defeat

Quang Nam have been fined VND50 million (US$2,800) along with a 0-3 loss by the Viet Nam Football Federation’s Disciplines Department for invading the pitch during their game against Ninh Binh at the First Division League.

Quang Nam reserves and coaches rushed onto the pitch when Ninh Binh scored a last-minute goal from a throw-in by halfback Mai Tien Thanh on Saturday.

Quang Nam coach Tran Vu complained that Thanh was standing 25m-30m closer to his team’s goal than he should have been.

But despite Quang Nam’s vociferous objections, referee Phung Quoc Quan stood by his decision. Quang Nam players then walked off the pitch.

HCM City women win at national petanque tournament

HCM City women beat Soc Trang to win the gold medal at the National Petanque (iron bowling) Championship.

On the men’s side, the title went to Ba Ria Vung Tau, who defeated Military Zone 9 in the final.

The event has attracted 113 players from 10 provinces and cities.

The tournament, which is a testing ground ahead of the third Asian Indoor Games in Viet Nam this October and Southeast Asian Games in Laos in December, ends next Monday.

HCM City topped the medals table last year with four golds.
