Minh rises in Badminton rankings; Swiss, Belgian win Le Fruit Triathlon; Gia Lai win special football event

Nguyen Tien Minh has risen two spots to 11th on the World Badminton Federation’s latest rankings. His 39,180 ranking points in the men’s singles is the highest achieved by a Vietnamese player.

Minh will join almost 250 players from 28 countries contesting the Singapore Open Super Series starting next Tuesday.

Swiss, Belgian win Le Fruit Triathlon

Two Swiss and a Belgian youth took top honours at the 8th annual Le Fruit Triathlon for expatriates that ended in the popular Mui Ne resort area in Phan Thiet city on Saturday.

The three main categories of the triathlon are: the Gecko for children between 6 and 12 years of age; the Sta mina for those over 16; and the Sprint for all participants regardless of age.

Knstof Van Houdt of Belgium came in first in the Stamina category which comprises three events: 750m open water swimming; 40km mountain bike race; and an eight km off-beach run.

The victor in the Sprint category – a 300m open water swimming competition, 20km mountain bike race and five km off-beach run – was Amos Szvoboda of Switzerland.

Another Swiss, Aaron Benjamin, won the Gecko category, the first off-road triathlon for kids that comprises a 100m open water swimming competition, a 3km mountain bike race and 1,000m off-beach run.

The Le Fruit Triathlon is a friendly event for expatriate families in Viet Nam. This year the contest attracted 180 participants of various ages from 20 different countries

Gia Lai win special football event

Gia Lai beat Rehabilitation Centre No 4 4-0 in the final of the Disadvantaged Children’s Football Tournament on Saturday after also easily winning earlier games.

The winners earned VND20 million (US$1,100) and the Stylish Team prize. The team’s Rmanh Suo was named the best goalie and Le Vi the best player.

In the play-off for third, Thailand beat Ha Noi.

During the annual tournament, eight teams from throughout the nation competed in a round robin in two groups.

The tournament aimed to give poor children a chance to enjoy sport.

Organisers will soon name a Vietnamese team for a friendly tour of Thailand in September.
