Three national archery records fall; HCM City to host international meet; Sepak takraw team rakes it in; Hai Phong women triumph

Hanoian Nguyen Tien Cuong bettered his three national records in the three-string bow event at the National Top Archer Tournament at the National Sports Centre 1 in Ha Noi on Sunday.

Cuong’s teammate, Tran Nguyen Tieu Anh, failed to improver her record but did win the all-around event.

Ha Noi finished top of the medals table with 13 golds, 13 silvers, and 16 bronzes.

Hai Phong were second with four golds, four silvers and a bronze.

Phu Tho came third with three golds, six silvers and five bronze medals.

HCM City to host international meet

HCM City will host the International Athletics Tournament Open from July 10-12.

Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, and Singapore will compete along the hosts.

South Korea, who were second last year, has withdrawn.

Viet Nam is entering 250 athletes.

Among its brightest medal hopes are Vu Thi Huong, Nguyen Van Huynh, Bui Thi Nhung, Vu Van Huyen, Truong Thanh Hang, Nguyen Dinh Cuong.

The tournament comes ahead of the Asian Indoor Games and the Southeast Asian Games later this year.

Last year, Viet Nam topped the medals table with 24 golds, 34 silvers and 33 bronzes.

Sepak takraw team rakes it in

The National Sports Administration has awarded the national sepak takraw team more than VND1billion (US$55,500) for winning a gold and three silver medals at last month’s World Sepak Takraw Championship in Malaysia.

Luu Thi Thanh, Nguyen Hai Thao and Nguyen Thi Bich Thuy will receive about VND80 million ($4,400) for securing gold and silver medals.

The team will fly to Thailand to compete in the King’s Cup from July 2-7 and the World Games from July 16-26 in Kaoshiung City, Chinese Taiwan.

Hai Phong women triumph

Hai Phong beat Khanh Hoa 2-0 in the women’s final at the National Beach Volleyball Tournament in the central province of Quang Binh on Sunday.

HCM City beat Quang Binh to grab the bronze.

On the men’s side, HCM City took the title after overcoming Khanh Hoa 2-0.

Vikoda 1 and Vikoda 2 from Khanh Hoa took the silver and bronze medals, respectively.

The tournament, at the Sun Spa resort in Dong Hoi city, attracted 21 teams from seven provinces and cities.

Le Van Xuan, vice head of the organising committee, said the best performing athletes would be selected for the national team competing next at the Southeast Asia Games.
