Taekwondo coach sees first test; Women win at sepak takraw; Viet Nam to host youth athletics; Team gets new sponsor

The progress made by the national team will be tested at the regional taekwondo championships that will take place in HCM City from June 5-8 at the Phan Dinh Phung Gymnasium.

The Viet Nam Taekwondo Federation decided to strengthen the coaching board by hiring former world champion Kim Jae Sik, 28, to train young athletes for future competitions.

Kim began coaching the national team in February for a monthly salary of US$2,700 and it is his first test for the South Korean trainer.

Teams from eight countries – Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines and Viet Nam – will participate in the tournament.

Women win at sepak takraw

Viet Nam took one gold and three silver medals at the World Sepak Takraw Championships in Malaysia.

The gold medal went to the women’s team who beat Thailand 2-1 in the final.

Viet Nam’s won regu 1 over the Thais. Thailand beat Viet Nam in regu 2. In the decisive third, Thailand took an early lead but Viet Nam recovered to gain an overall victory of 2-1.

Thanh, who was awarded Best Athlete in 2006 said: “It is our gold medal after nine years of waiting. (Viet Nam women won gold in the King’s Cup in Thailand in 2000).

“We are better than we were at the Asian Games in 2006.

“Our next task is to train for the 25th Southeast Asian Games in Laos in December.”

The Viet Nam Federation of sepak takraw awarded VND31 million (US$1,720) to the team.

Viet Nam to host youth athletics

The 4th Southeast Asian Junior Athletics Championships to be held in Viet Nam on Saturday and Sunday will attract 198 athletes from nine countries, except Philippines and East Timor.

Viet Nam has 63 players in the tournament to be held at Thong Nhat stadium in HCM City.

This is the fourth participation in the championship by Viet Nam which has set a target of the first three places in each even and to win five gold medals.

Viet Nam pins its hope on athletes Do Thi Thao in the women’s 800m, Do Nguyen Thi Thanh Dieu in the 3000m, Tran Hoa Hue city in high-jump, Bui Thi Thu Thao in heptathlon and Duong Van Thai in the boys’ 800m.

All teams are expected to arrive in Viet Nam tomorrow, June 4 to get familiar with the gymnasiums and the weather.

The tournament will be attended by five officials from the Asian Athletics Association and the Southeast Asian Athletics Association and seven international referees.

Team gets new sponsor

The Song Lam Nghe An football team will be transferred to Lilama SHB joint stock company this week.

It will become the Lilama SHS SLNA football joint stock company, says Hoang Xuan Luc, standing vice secretary of the Nghe An provincial Committee of the Party.

Le Tan Hoa, general director of Lilama SHB, gave the team a cash prize on Monday for the team’s achievement in the first leg of V-League.

At present, they rank fifth with 20 points. They will continue their second leg on Sunday.
