But the Da Nang coach and former international, 37, has a habit of trendsetting: he is the only Vietnamese footballer to ever play abroad when he signed for China’s Chongqing Lifan, and when he was first named the Best Coach of the Month in March, he was the youngest to win the award.

He won 60 caps for Viet Nam, another national record, and is the country’s top goal scorer.

He played for Military Zone 7, Ho Chi Minh City Police, where he had his most productive stint, East Asian Bank, Chongqing Lifan and Da Nang.

Duc has brought a tough coaching and management style to Da Nang, helping the club climb to the top of the 2009 V-League, five points ahead of the second-placed team.

“Cohesion between the coaching staff and players and the team’s strong efforts have brought the success,” he says modestly.

“Besides, young players have progressed rapidly and both local and foreign players are playing with team spirit,” he added.

In a poll on VTV3 fans chose the 59th minute goal by Dong Tam Long An’s Antonio Carlos in the match against Hai Phong on May 3 as the best goal in May.

The V-League organising committee announced Hoang Anh Gia Lai as the best team and Lee Nguyen as the best player in May.

HCM City golfers take honours at country’s first women’s event

Pham Thi Nguyen Trang and Kim Chi Fairfield finished in that order at the Her World Golf Viet Nam 2009, the country’s first ever event for women, which wrapped up last weekend at HCM City’s Vietnam Golf & Country Club.

The local businesswomen received prizes from the organisers, Her World Viet Nam, one of the country’s leading women’s magazines, and the main sponsor, LG-Vina’s cosmetic brand The History of Whoo.

They also qualify for the grand final of the Her World Golf Challenge Asian Series, a regional golfing competition to be organised by Her World Singapore at the island’s Sentosa Club later this month.

Dao Van Anh received the prize for Best-Dressed Golfer.

Nobody won the hole-in-one prize, a BMW car worth US$70,000.

More than 100 local and Viet kieu golfers participated in the event that has come as a boon to women golfers, whose only option until now has been to play with men.
