Viet Nam triumph at taekwondo; Duong takes second gold for VN; Lai takes jersey at cycling champs

Viet Nam finished top of the leader board at the Southeast Asian Taekwondo Championship in HCM City with 20 gold medals.

In the team combat events, Nghiem Thi Huyen, Nguyen Thi Hoai Thu, Trinh Kim Tuong Van and Nguyen Thai Hoang Minh pocketed four golds for the host team on Saturday at the Phan Dinh Phung Gymnasium.

Earlier, Pham Huu Son, Vo Hoang Giao and Nguyen Thi Anh Dao took three golds on the first day of the competition.

In the junior events, Vietnamese martial artists won seven golds in the performance categories and six others in combat.

Second place went to the Philippines, which won 12 golds, 12 silvers and 10 bronzes. Indonesia finished third, with four gold, four silver and 10 bronze medals

The tournament drew nearly 200 participants from eight countries.

The next major championship will be the 25th Southeast Asian Games later this year in Laos.

Duong takes second gold for VN

Vu Thuy Duong successfully won her second gold medal at the Southeast Asian Age Group Swimming Championship in Malaysia.

Duong finished first in the girls’ Under-17 100m breaststroke with a time of 1 min 16.19 secs on Saturday.

Her first gold was in the 50m breaststroke, which she won with a time of 34.18 secs.

Meanwhile, Nguyen Thi Kim Tuyen won a bronze medal in the girls’ U14 50m butterfly, while Nguyen Tran Tam won a bronze in the boys’ 200m freestyle.

Earlier, Viet Nam grabbed three silvers and one bronze medal on Friday.

The annual tournament wound up yesterday. Malaysia finished first.

Lai takes jersey at cycling champs

Le Tan Lai of the Ifaco Chau Phu team took the yellow jersey at the National Cycling to Rural Areas Tournament after two stages on Sunday.

Lai took the lead of the first 42km stage from Long An province’s Moc Hoa district to Tan Hung district after 1 hour 9 minutes 51 seconds with an average speed of over 36km per hour.

Although he was not present in the top three of the second stage, from Tan Hung Ferry to Hong Ngu town of Dong Thap province, Lai still topped the tables with the best time among other riders.

He was followed by Nguyen Hoang Sang of the Long Xuyen team and Vo Thai Hung from Hau Giang.

The race will continue today with two stages, from Cao Lanh Ferry to Chau Doc.

The tournament has drawn more than 60 cyclists competing for seven legs. The final will be on Thursday.
