Team effort: The Viet Nam team lost 4-1 to Thailand in the title match at the Asean indoor football final at the Phu Tho Stadium in HCM City on June 14.

Thailand lifted their seventh consecutive trophy in the tournament that Viet Nam hosted for the first time.

The Vietnamese team, which made their first final match appearance in the annual regional tournament since 2005, began the match with confidence, but Suphawut Thueanklang’s goal in the game’s very first minute set the tone.

In response, the Vietnamese team focused on offence which allowed the Thais to exploit the hole in the defending line and blast in three goals by Natee Thusiri, who hit the net twice, and Nattawut Kongnimit to stretch their lead to 4-0.

Ngo Anh Dung’s scored the host’s only goal during a power play in spite of home support from the several thousand spectators packed into Phu Tho Stadium.

Indonesia struggled to a 4-3 victory for a third place finish.
The Philippines started off in front with a goal by Jason Nicolas Maria Dantes in the early minutes, but the Indonesians nailed three quick goals off Denny Handoyo, Indra Kernia P, and A. Taufiqurrahman for a 3-1 lead.

The Philippines’ Misagh Medina managed a goal but Sayan Karmadi scored his 10th goal in the tournament to stretch Indonesia’s lead 4-2.

Although The Philippine’s Dantes blasted in the final minutes for a goal there was not enough time left to change the outcome.

Thailand’s Keattiyot Chalaemkhet, Viet Nam’s goalkeeper Dang Phuoc Anh and Indonesia’s Sayan Karmadi with 10 goals were all awarded prizes for best player, best goalkeeper and best scorer, respectively.

The fair-play award went to the Indonesian team.

The 2009 AFF Futsal Championship was attended by seven instead of eight teams as scheduled when Brunei withdrew just before the tournament kicked off.
