Golfers chasing $200,000 in prizes; HCM City holds track and field meet; VN students triumph in Serbia; Martial Arts Academy to be formed; Bonus for women footballers

As many as 240 golfers are contesting the Golf Ngay Nay (Golf Today) tournament which starts today at HCM City’s Thu Duc Golf and Country Club.

Golfers, who are local and foreign businessmen who are living and working in Viet Nam and leaders of central agencies and diplomatic corps, will participate in the one-day tournament to compete for a total prize of US$200,000.

The tournament is organised by Sai Gon Golf Association and the Ngay Nay Communication Joint Stock Company.

HCM City holds track and field meet

More than 500 athletes will take part in the HCM City’s International Track and Field Tournament tomorrow and Sunday at the Thong Nhat Stadium.

Host HCM City will have 100 athletes competing – more than any other teams.

The Viet Nam national team will be sending 26 athletes to gain much needed practice ahead of the Asian Indoor Games and the Southeast Asian Games later this year. Five international teams are South Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Singapore.

VN students triumph in Serbia

Vietnamese students grabbed two silvers and a bronze medal at the Universiade World Student Games in Belgrade, Serbia.

World junior champion Nguyen Dinh Toan earned his silver in the men’s individual poomsae (performance). Earlier, Toan pocketed a silver in the team poomsae event.

The bronze went to Trung Anh and Thu Ngan in the mixed pair’s poomsae class.

After seven days, Viet Nam rank 26 out of 36 teams and lead the Southeast Asia region. Viet Nam are hoping to win more medals in the combat events.

Martial Arts Academy to be formed

The Tay Son Binh Dinh Martial Arts Academy will be established under the support of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and Binh Dinh province’s People’s Committee.

Leading masters will be invited to the academy, which is designed to develop traditional arts, said Van Trong Hung, director of the provincial Culture, Sports and Tourism Department.

The academy is scheduled to open in 2010.

Bonus for women footballers

The national football team received a bonus of VND300 million (US$16,500) for winning a berth in the final round of the 2010 Asian Women’s Football Championship.

Viet Nam defeated Hong Kong 7-0 and Kyrgyzstan 10-1 to top group C in the qualifying round. Viet Nam and group B leader Thailand and one more team from group A will join six other teams in the final in 2010. The venue has yet to be selected.
