Nguyen swims to national record; Thien loses semi-final to top seed in UK; Hung starts prominent on cycling tour; Long An offers a big carrot to Thang

Vo Thai Nguyen swam two minutes 03.55 seconds, which was inside his national record of 2:04.45, when ranked 49th among 75 contesting the men’s 200m butterfly at the World Swimming Championships in Rome.

Viet Nam’s Nguyen Huu Viet set a national record for the men’s 100m breaststroke of 1:02.17 when ranked 53rd among 142 competitors on Monday.

Thien loses semi-final to top seed in UK

Vietnamese teenager Nguyen Hoang Thien lost his quarter-final match at the Rushbrooke International U-18 tennis tournament in Ireland.

The seventh seed, Thien was beaten 6-4, 6-3 by top seed Markovic Stefan, of Great Britain.

Thien’s next assignment is an international U-14 tournament in Belgium.

Hung starts prominent on cycling tour

Viet Nam’s Mai Nguyen Hung was a close second in the first stage of the Perlis Cycling Open in Malaysia on Wednesday.

It took a photo to separate Hung from host Anuar Manan, who won the 186km stage in two hours 29.22 minutes.

Long An offers a big carrot to Thang

Striker Nguyen Viet Thang is being tempted with a VND2.5 billion (US$139,000) five-year contract to stay at V-League team Dong Tam Long An, a club source said.

Thang, who helped Viet Nam win the ASEAN Football Championship last year, was rumoured to be moving to T&T Ha Noi.

Long An won the V-League in 2005-06 but is sixth of the remaining 13 teams this season after Saturday’s 3-0 win over Hoang Anh Gia Lai.
