HCM City to host World Vovinam Championship; Da Nang show their stuff at marathon swimming event; U-19 football team head to regional tourney

Vovinam is popular in over 35 countries and territories around the world, with hundreds of thousands of followers.

HCM City will host the first World Vovinam Martial Arts Championship at Military Zone 7 Gymnasium from July 26-30.

The world event focused on Viet Nam’s national martial art (Vovinam) will see competitors from 24 countries and territories clashing for 30 sets of medals in performance and combat events.

Vovinam is popular in over 35 countries and territories around the world, with hundreds of thousands of followers.

It will be an official sport at the third Asian Indoor Games to be hosted by Viet Nam in October.

Da Nang show their stuff at marathon swimming event

Da Nang swam to success in marathon swimming when the central city’s athletes won overall at the National Marathon Swimming Championships – Vinashin Cup in Ben Tre province on Tuesday.

Nguyen Thi Kim Oanh finished first in the women’s 5km for the gold, adding another medal to her title win last year.

In the men’s 7km, Army’s Nguyen Xuan Hung triumphed to gold.

The competition, which drew 97 swimmers representing 11 teams for competition in seven men’s and women’s events on the Ham Luong River, 70km west of HCM City, was a tune-up for national swimmers ahead of the 3rd Asian Indoor Games in Viet Nam in October.

U-19 football team head to regional tourney

Former national team captain Vo Hoang Buu will coach the national U-19 football team in preparation for its participation in the Southeast Asian Football Championship at HCM City’s Thanh Long Sport Centre next month.

The 39-member team began their practice at the centre yesterday prior to the regional youth tournament which will take place from August 5-15.

Viet Nam will play Singapore, Malaysia and the Philippines in group A. Group B will see matches between Australia, Thailand, Laos and Cambodia, and

Indonesia, Myanmar, East Timor and Brunei will clash in group C.
