Vu progresses in carom 3; Da Nang prepares for National Games; Ninh Binh eager for V-League spot; Dong Thap take U-15 football trophy

Billiard player Duong Anh Vu pocketed a cash prize of 1,300 euros (US$1,900) as he qualified for the Matosinhos World Cup Carom 3 quarter-finals in Portugal on Sunday.

Vu, who currently ranks 14th in the world, also earned another 26 points in the world rankings.

Vu, who bagged golds at the 2007 Asian Indoor Games in Macau and the Southeast Asian Games in Thailand, beat Cenet Lutfi from Turkey 3-0 to go against Eddy Merkcx of Belgium in the quarter-finals. However, Vu failed to beat the World No 10 after a 3-0 loss (11-15, 11-15, 1-15).

Vu made it to the quarter-finals in this event three years ago in Wendel, where he also lost to Eddy Merkcx.

Da Nang prepares for National Games

Da Nang has ramped up efforts to complete a 5,000-seat gymnasium and other venues in preparation for the National Sports Games next year.

The central city will invest a total of VND728 billion (US$40.4 million) to complete the competition venues and facilities for next December’s games.

Held every four years, the games are a mini-Olympics for Vietnamese athletes.

Ninh Binh eager for V-League spot

Ninh Binh raised their hopes of a promotion to the premier football championship, V-League, after beating Tien Giang 3-1 in an away game on Saturday.

The northern team lead the First Division with 46 points after 19 games, 10 points ahead of runner-up Hoa Phat Ha Noi, who beat Tay Ninh 2-1 in the 19th round on Saturday.

Binh Dinh, who were defeated by Can Tho 1-3, rank third.

The First Division championship, which has seven games left in the season, will see their first and second place teams overall advance to the V-League next season.

The third place team will compete in a play-off match against the 12th place V-League team for a berth in the premiership next year.

Dong Thap take U-15 football trophy

Dong Thap took the National U-15 Football Championship trophy after beating Da Nang 3-2 on penalties in the final at Vinh Stadium on Saturday.

The two teams duked it out in a penalty shoot-out after drawing 1-1 in official time.

Nguyen Anh Phong of Da Nang, Ho Phuc Tinh of Nghe An and Nguyen Van Ton from Binh Dinh tied for Top Scorer title by scoring four goals each in the championship.

Host Dang Anh Tuan took Best Player, while Nguyen Son Hai of Dong Thap won the Best Goalkeeper title.
