LookAtVietnam – Phan Thi Thuy Trang tightened her grip on the National Women’s Cycling Open by winning yesterday’s third stage (July 14) from Ben Tre to Vinh Long.

Home stretch: Competitors race during the National Women’s Cycling Tournament’s third stage between Ben Tre and Vinh Long. Phan Thi Thuy Trang of Agifish An Giang won the stage while also retaining the overall leader’s jersey.

During the tour’s longest stage, there were many short-lived attempts at breakaways by riders from Sai Gon Plant Protection, Malaysia and Kazakhstan.

But they received strong opposition from Trang’s Agifish An Giang team and Binh Duong and Domesco Dong who dominated the stage

As one of potential candidates, Trang had no difficulty strengthening her top position as the overall leader.

Trang also made some individual sprints during the 110km and made the vital break close to the line.

The national team member’s time covered the stage in three hours 13 minutes 23 seconds at an average speed of 34.129km/h.

Pham Thi Thuy Lien, of Domesco Dong Thap and Malaysian Azian Alias were second and third respectively.

After the third stage, Trang’s overall time was 6:41.36. She was followed by Thuy Lien, Vo Thi Phuong Phi, of Binh Duong, and Alias.

Yesterday’s win also helped Trang top the race for the green jersey, which goes to the rider accumulating the most points during the seven stages. She moved to 26 points, two more than Phi, the previous leader.

Binh Duong lead the teams’ event but there is little on times between them, Domesco Dong Thap and An Giang.

Today’s 60km fourth stage is from Can Tho City to Soc Trang.
