LookAtVietnam – Following their recent top form, Viet Nam’s wrestlers have high hopes for success at the World Youth Wrestling Championships in Ankara, Turkey from August 4.

World Youth Wrestling Championships

- Opening ceremony: August 4.
- Closing ceremony: August 9.
- August 4-8: qualifying and final rounds of boys’ Greco-Roman U50kg, U55kg, U60kg, U66kg, U74kg, U84kg, U96kg and U120kg categories.
- August 7-8: qualifying and final rounds of eight girls’ freestyle U44kg, U48kg, U51kg, U55kg, U59kg, U67kg, U63kg and U72kg.
- August 8-9: qualifying and final rounds of the eight boys’ freestyle events.

Hai has little chance of medalling in Turkey but his coaches said he will gain a lot of experience.

Long, who will travel with the team, is confident his athletes have a bright future and said the trip will enhance their chances in the qualifying round for the 16th Asian Games (ASIAD).

“ASIAD is the dream of Asian wrestlers but to get medals there we need various factors like good draws and a little luck,” he said.

“To win medals, we will have to defeat big name rivals from China, India and Japan. If our women wrestlers avoid injuries, they have some prospects and we will try to help them peak for the event.

“Like our young women wrestlers, our men lack experience internationally. When they are more experienced, their chances will increase.”

Along with freestyle wrestling, men’s Greco-Roman wrestling is a new direction for Viet Nam.

“I don’t want to make predictions ahead of ASIAD but Viet Nam have potential in Greco-Roman wrestling. The biggest advantage is our team is being trained by a qualified Uzbek who is sharing his knowledge with our young wrestlers,” Long said.
