Vietnam’s top badminton player Nguyen Tien Minh will play the world number one Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia at the BWF World Championships in India Thursday.

Minh, ranked 9th in the world, beat Frenchman Brice Leverdez, ranked 41 in the world, by a score of 21-14, 21-16 in 31 minutes Wednesday.

Today’s match is the second time Minh will have played Lee after Vietnam’s ace upset the world number one 24-22, 20-22, 21-19 at the Singapore Super Series 2009 two months ago.

Minh jumped five places to ninth in the world ranking released by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) on July 30 after he won the SCG Thailand Grand Prix Gold 2009 championship late last month and earned 7,000 points.

Sixty-four players have entered the on-going BWF World Championships in the Indian city of Hyderabad. Round 1/16 begins Thursday.
