High jumper Bui Thi Nhung from Hai Phong and triple jumper Nguyen Van Hung of Ha Noi were eliminated for the finals of the International Athletics Federation for the 12th IAAF World Athletics Championships in Berlin.

Nhung, 26, failed to clear the bar at 1.8m in three attempts in the women’s high jump, while Hung only made a 15.56m leap in the men’s triple jump contest.

The athletes, who were awarded wild card for the championship, could not match their personal bests from regional competitions.

Nhung reached her top mark of 1.94 in Thailand five years ago, while Hung set a national record of 16.37 in HCM City last month.

Karate artist Ngan trains in Japan ahead of SEA Games

Top karate performer Nguyen Hoang Ngan has been in prolonged training in Japan in preparation for December’s Southeast Asian Games.

As scheduled, Ngan, who won gold in the women’s kata (performance) at the World Games in Kaoshiung City, Taiwan in July, will have a three-month practice in karate’s native country along with teammates Do Thi Thu Hang and Nguyen Thi Thanh Hang.

The top athletes will be golden hopes for Viet Nam in the SEA Games in Laos at the end of this year.

Youth footballers sign to play in international tournament

Five teams have registered to compete at the International U-21 Football Tournament in southern Binh Duong province on October 10-18, the Viet Nam Football Federation said.

Teams from Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, China, Iran and the host country will compete in a round robin in two groups, of which the top two in each will qualify for the semi-finals.

This will be the third consecutive year that Viet Nam has hosted the international tournament for youth footballers.

Vinh faces fitness test at Portuguese Super Liga club

Top striker Le Cong Vinh is scheduled to have a fitness test at Portuguese Super Liga club Leixoes on Sunday.

Vinh of T&T Ha Noi, who will join the club on short-term loan under a deal between T&T and Leixoes, would soon play if he passes the test.

During the tour in Europe, T&T Ha Noi team chairman Do Quang Hien said he was looking to sign top players to his team next year.

In June, Vietnamese premier league Hai Phong Cement attracted 1998 world champion Denilson de Oliveira from Brazil on a short-term loan.

But the world star cancelled his contract with the Vietnamese team after only one game in three weeks due to an injured knee.
