LookAtVietnam – Achieving a height of 1.86m, Bui Thi Nhung still didn’t have a rival on the second day at the National Athletics Championship 2009.

Track-and-field star Bui Thi Nung from Hai Phong city won women’s high jump gold at HCMC’s Thon Nhat Stadium but still ended up disappointed she couldn’t beat her own record.

It followed fans leaving dissatisfied with the performance of men’s champion high-jumper Nguyen Duy Bang on the first day. Dubbed the “record maker”, Bang this time managed a height of only 2m with Hue city province’s Tran Cong Phuoc scooping gold medal with 2.11m.

Also on the second day, running queen Truong Thanh Hang joined the women’s 800m race as a member of the national track-and-field team but not as an official competitor because of the dispute between her old team HCM City and new team Ninh Binh. Though she was still the top runner, her record was not recognized and received no medal.

In men’s 800m race, Nguyen Dinh Cuong from Ninh Binh province won the gold medal with a time of 1.52.56 minutes while Vu Van Huyen of the Military team easily won gold in the men’s decathlon with 7069 points.

Southeast Asian Queen of Speed Vu Thi Huong impressed in the sprint . At 11.43 seconds, she not only brought a women’s 100m race gold medal for her team, An Giang, but also broke her own 2007 record of 11.47 seconds. It’s hoped Huong will be able to successfully defend her title in the women’s 100m and 200m race at the upcoming SEA Games in Laos this December.

Meanwhile, organisers decided to take back two gold medals from the Military team and Khanh Hoa for bad behaviour.

The National Track-and-Field Championship 2009 takes place September 16-20 in the Thong Nhat Stadium, HCM City, where 500 athletes race for 48 sets of medals.
