Each U23 player will need their own individual strategy in order for the squad to play its best at the 25th SEA Games, said Portuguese coach Henrique Calisto.

Each U23 player will need their own individual strategy in order for the squad to play its best at the 25th SEA Games in Laos this December, said Portuguese coach Henrique Calisto.

The national football team’s coach made the statement during a meeting with the press at the La Thanh Hotel in Hanoi on Friday as the U23 team gathered to prepare for the event.

Through assistant Ngo Le Bang, Calisto said in Portuguese that he would “diagnose” the players to see what the best unique strategy would be for each, rather than choose his own strategy and force all players to apply it.

“In the first few days, my job is to see what the players know, what they need, and what they can do,” said Calisto.

“V-League has just ended and they have had only 10 days off. I can’t ask them to do physical training now. More importantly, I need to help them understand the way I want them to play together.”

Calisto and his players have three months to prepare for the regional event.

The Portuguese tactician said he and his players were hopeful for a medal at the games, but he refused to predict any results, saying that there was all too often a “gap between expectations and reality.”
