Thai League club Chonburi came back twice from a goal down to earn a 2-2 draw with former V-League champions Binh Duong in the first leg of the Asian Football Confederation Cup quarterfinals in Bangkok Tuesday.

The visitors looked confident at the Rajamangala Stadium and took the lead in just 13 minutes as captain Huynh Quang Thanh capitalized on a mistake by the hosts’ custodian Kosin Hathairattanakool.

However, Chonburi captain Pipob On-Mo emulated his Vietnamese counterpart just six minutes later to level scores, looping the ball over Binh Duong goalkeeper The Anh.

Midfielder Vu Phong put the visitors in front again a few minutes later, turning in a pass from Philani.

Binh Duong held on to their lead until halfway through the second half when Arthit Sunthornphit’s 69th minute goal restored parity once again.

Chonburi will travel to Vietnam for the second leg match on September 30.

Speaking after the match, Binh Duong coach Mai Duc Chung said, “We have gained the upper hand with the draw. Scoring two goals in an away match is good. We will attack more in the second leg to advance to the semifinals.”

Chonburi coach Kiatisuk Senamuang said his players were not in their best form in the match after several big matches in the Thai League.

Kiatisuk said the draw was not too bad a result and they would play better to beat Binh Duong on the latter’s home turf in the return leg.
