LookAtVietnam – Five national records were set at the Swimming and Finswimming Cup yesterday, September 22, at Ha Noi’s Aquatic Sports Centre.

The swimming events will begin today and will finish on Sunday with the participation of SEA Games champion and Olympian Nguyen Huu Viet in the men’s 100m and 200m breaststroke events.

HCM City-based Phan Luu Cam Thanh opened the day with his record in the men’s 50m apnoea event, which he finished in only 14.71 sec. His result broke the old record of 15.03, which he set last October.

Thanh pocketed two records and gold medals after three days.

Nguyen Ngoc Quang also peaked yesterday with a record in the men’s 200m monofins event, with a time of 1:43.33, 0.64 better than the old mark set by Dinh Hoang Long at the national championship in July.

Ha Noi’s Luu Thi Phuong proved her in talent at the women’s 200m monofins event, taking 1:53.86 to finish the race at a time over three seconds faster than her nearest opponent and setting a new national record. She set the old one (1:55.22) just two months ago at the nationals.

The fourth record of the day went to Hai Phong’s Nguyen Thi Thuong who dominated the women’s 800m surface (diving with a snorkel) event. Thuong bettered her own four-year-old record by 0.42.

Tran Bao Thu of Tay Ninh wrapped up the day with a gold and a record in the men’s 800m surface at 6:40.40. His result kicked away the one-year record that he himself set last October.

It was his second record at the tournament after the first in the men’s 400m surface on Monday.

Ha Noi’s Duong Thi Huyen Trang also had a strong day. The 19-year-old won two gold medals yesterday for an amazing result of four records. Trang not only dominated the individual events but also the team relays.

After three days, the national competitors earned 11 records, greater than at any prior Cup.

Host Ha Noi maintained at the top of the overall medal tally with 14 gold, eight silvers and six bronze medals. HCM City-followed with eight golds, five silvers and three bronzes. The Army team was third, grabbing two gold, four silver and four bronze medals.

The swimming events will begin today and will finish on Sunday with the participation of SEA Games champion and Olympian Nguyen Huu Viet in the men’s 100m and 200m breaststroke events.
