Vietnam’s top badminton player Nguyen Tien Minh lost 15-21, 16-21 to China’s No. four Bao Chunlai in the semifinals of the Yonex Open Japan Super Series in Tokyo on Saturday.

Ranked eight in the world, Minh has lost all the four encounters so far against the world’s former number two, who is currently ranked 25th.

Despite the defeat, the only Vietnamese badminton player to enter the world’s top one hundred rankings actually did better than the goal he had set of advancing to the quarterfinals of the Super Series contest in Japan this year.

Having progressed to the semifinals of the competition, Minh will move one place up to seventh when the world rankings are released on Thursday. He had climbed from ninth to eighth last Thursday.

The Yonex Open Japan Super Series in Tokyo, which carries a total cash prize of US$200,000, ends on Sunday.
