Flying to victory: HCM City’s Tran Thi Kim Tuyen completes her 100m butterfly at the National Swimming Championships - VietinBank Cup at the Ha Noi Aquatic Sports Centre. The 15-year-old national team member grabbed eight records in the five-day tournament.

Fifteen year-old Tuyen broke eight records in the course of the event. She recorded in the women’s 200m butterfly yesterday, September 27 and won as the best athlete of the championship.

She finished first in the women’s 100m butterfly with a time of 1:02.72 to top the previous 1:03.96 record.

Tuyen and her teammates set a new record in the 4×100m freestyle relay with a time of 4:01.62, surpassing the old 4:02.79 record.

The young swimmer also broke the record for the first swimmer of the relay event with a time of 59.40secs, shaving 19 seconds off the old record set by Tran Tam Nguyen 24 hours previously.

On Friday, Tuyen shaved 31.28 seconds off the previous record to win gold and another new record in the 50m butterfly.

On the first day of competition, she broke records in the 200m backstroke with a time of 2:22.35, while clocking in at 2:24.68 for a new 200m medley record.

The HCM City-born athlete also set a record in the 1,500m freestyle.

It was the first time in history a Vietnamese swimmer set eight records at the national championship.

Viet broke another three national records at the championship.

The 21-year-old swimmer set a new record in the men’s 200m breaststroke with a time of 2:16.61 on Saturday, wiping out the 2:17:00 record he set at the World Swimming Championship in Italy two months ago.

Earlier in the competition he also set two new records in the 50m and 100m breaststroke.

HCM City triumphed at the championship with 16 gold, 10 silver and 11bronze medals.

The Army team ranked second with eight gold, four silver, four bronze medals, while Ha Noi rounded out the top three by bagging four golds and two silvers.

The annual tournament has been sponsored by the Viet Nam Joint Stock Bank for Industry and Trade for the last three years.
