Truong Son wins Kuala Lumpur Open; Futsal team to train in Japan; Red tape keeps Tung out of Cup

Grand Master (GM) Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son won the Kuala Lumpur Open outright with 7.5 points in nine games on Tuesday.

This was a very meaningful win for Son, as he has not won an international win in the past two years.

Son, who was the event’s No 1 seed, had six wins and three draws. He was half a point ahead of the runner-up, Indonesian GM Susanto Megaranto, who made a bad start in the tournament with two losses to weaker opponents. However, all of Megaranto’s games were wins, including his last round against second-seeded GM Vietnamese Dao Thien Hai.

The tournament began last Friday with a nine-round Swiss system format. This was the second time the tournament has been held in Malaysia since last year.

Futsal team to train in Japan

In preparation for the third Asian Indoor Games (AIG), to be held in Viet Nam from October 30 to November 11, the 19-member national futsal (indoor football) team will have a seven-day training session in Japan and friendly matches with leading teams here on October 5-12.

After the third AIG, the team will try their best in the qualifying group with Malaysia, the Philippines and Cambodia for the 2010 Asian tournament.

The team has won a silver at the recent ASEAN Futsal Championships.

Red tape keeps Tung out of Cup

Binh Duong’s newcomer, Thanh Tung, has not been listed in the team’s lineup that is set to clash against Chonburi of Thailand in the quarter-finals’ first leg of the AFC Cup, on September 15.

Tung, who has signed a two-year contract with the former V-League champions, will miss a chance to play because he has not completed all documents required to play. Therefore, the club will be unable to register him for the game.

Binh Duong managers expect to have him playing in the second match on September 30.

Tung is one of eight players who finished their contract with Nam Dinh club at the end of the 2008-09 season. According to a close source to Binh Duong, Tung receives VND860 million (US$46,500) after signing his new contract.

Ha appointed coach of U-19 team

Former football coach of Ha Noi-based T&T and Thanh Hoa teams, Trieu Quang Ha, has been appointed as the head coach of the national U-19 team.

The 37-year-old replaced coach Vo Hoang Buu, who will work for the HCM City team, which has been relegated to the First Division from the premier V-League.

Ha, who was born in Thanh Hoa, has a tough job ahead of him. He must help the U-19 team compete well at the upcoming qualifying round of the U-19 Asian Football Championships in Thailand.
