Grand Master Le Quang Liem is poised to win the fourth Kolkata Open chess tournament.

The 18-year-old won his top board encounter against GM Anton Filippov of Uzbekistan playing black on Wednesday and now tops the leader board with 7.5 points.

Viktor Laznicka is in second place with 7 points.

Both Liem and Laznicka have already met each other and will be playing different opponents in the final round.

Campaign keeps ball rolling

Three-hundred thousand signatures have been collected on a large ball that is being used in a campaign to encourage the national U23 football team at the 25th SEA Games, to be held in Laos later this year.

The ball for the For Viet Nam’s Football Heart campaign can be dismantled and reassembled for transportation purposes.

The ball will be taken to Laos and carried to all venues where the national team will play its matches. It will travel to Bien Hoa city in Dong Nai province on September 26-27, HCM City a month later, Hai Phong city in early November, and then to Ha Noi and Vinh city in Nghe An province.

To reach their target of one million signatures, the organisers will also gather both written and electronic signatures, beginning on October 1, at Boss paint outlets nationwide, or through online websites www.traitimbongda.com or www.traitimbongda.vn.

Volleyballers lose to Kazakhstan

Viet Nam lost 1-3 to Kazakhstan in the second round of the 15th Asian Senior Women’s Volleyball Championships held in Ha Noi on Wednesday.

Viet Nam, despite playing at home, lost the first two sets 13-25, 25-27. They came back in the third set 25-23 but lost the fourth 25-17.

In the first round, Viet Nam beat Australia, Iran and Sri Lanka.

The tournament has attracted 14 teams, who have been divided into four groups. The top two teams from each group will go through to the semi-finals of the biannual event.
