National tennis tourney breaks for rain; HCM City win weightlifting champs

Rain delayed several games at the National Tennis Championship, which is being played at Ha Noi’s Sao Mai Club.

Defending champion Do Minh Quan of Tanimex HCM City looked certain to win his quarter-final encounter with Ngo Duc Duong of Becamex Binh Duong when the match was stopped with Duong leading 6-2 and 3-0. The game was restarted several times, but was finally called off.

The women’s quarter-final match between Nguyen Ai Ngoc Van and Tran Lam Anh was also delayed.

Today defending female champion Nguyen Thuy Dung from Ha Noi will meet with Da Nang’s Huynh Phuong Dai Trang, who beat Tran Thi Tam Hao of Tanimex 6-0, 6-2 in her quarter-final encounter.

Meanwhile, veteran Huynh Mai Huynh of Tanimex trounced Le Thi Ngoc Phuong of the Army team 6-0, 6-0 in the other quarter-final match.

HCM City win weightlifting champs

HCM City bagged 12 gold medals to win the National Weightlifting Championship, which ended in Da Nang on Tuesday.

Although winning three gold medals in the men’s 62kg weight category, Ha Noi finished in second place with 11 golds, 13 silvers and six bronze medals. Hai Duong finished third.

Olympic silver medallist Hoang Anh Tuan failed to win an expected gold medal in the men’s 56kg class. He failed to snatch 122kg. He was also forced to settle for silver in the clean&jerk, after failing to lift 145kg on Tuesday.

Five new records were set at the championship.
