The national women’s football team will start practice mid-September in the hopes of reclaiming the gold medal at the 25th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games to be held in Laos this December.

Viet Nam won gold in three SEA Games in a row in 2001, 2003 and 2005, but narrowly missed out on the gold two years ago at the 24th SEA Games after losing to Thailand in the final.

The 23-member team would include players who competed at the qualifying matches for the Asian Football Championship, said Chinese coach Chen Yun Fat. The coach said he would also give a chance to some young talented players, who stood out at the recent U-19 National Women’ Football Championship.

Viet Nam have won a silver at the ASEAN Women’s Football Federation Cup and a berth to compete in the final of the Asian Football Championship.

In preparation for the coming SEA Games, the team will have a ten-day intensive training course in the northern province of Vinh Phuc and then move to Ha Nam for training until mid-October.

On October 11, the team will go to Quang Ninh Province to compete at the International Coal Women’s Football Open from October 16 to October 23. This event has attracted four teams including the host Mineral Coal, the national team and two visitors .

After finishing the Coal Open, coach Fat’s players will return to Ha Noi; then they will train in Japan on November 1-8.

The Viet Nam women’s team currently stands 30th in the world.
