The third Asian Indoor Games opened in Hanoi on Friday night.

Vietnamese high jumper Bui Thi Nhung lit up the torch during the opening ceremony at the My Dinh National Stadium.

Then the President of the Olympic Council of Asia, Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah delivered a speech at the opening ceremony. He said he expected athletes could perform to their best at the AIG and demonstrate sports friendship. He also appreciated Vietnam’s efforts to host the event.

After a performance show, Vietnamese President Nguyen Minh Triet announced the official opening of the Games, which is themed “For a Rising Asia” this year.

Vietnamese Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Hoang Tuan Anh said at the opening ceremony that he hoped the event could contribute to the solidarity, cooperation and development of Asia.

More than 2,500 athletes are competing for 242 sets of medal in 20 sports, not to count one performance sport. The games include indoor track and field, dancing, chess, bowling, billiards, computer games, futsal (indoor football), three-person basketball and many others.

Sport events are taking place at 27 gymnasiums in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Hai Phong, Bac Ninh, Hai Duong and Quang Ninh. Hanoi is the main venue for 11 of the sports.
