Hy, who ran unopposed, took over in 2005. He was selected by 69 members of the VFF, including representatives from national football federations and premierships.

The VFF chairman is considered the most important position in Vietnamese football, which the country hopes to develop in order to be competitive on an international level.

“I am very glad to be selected as the chairman of VFF for the second term. I and the new executive board will try our best to make strides in the nation’s football,” the 62-year-old chairman said after winning 68 out of the total 69 votes (one abstention).

The meeting session also chose three vice-chairmen of VFF. They are Pham Ngoc Vien, Le Hung Dung, Nguyen Lan Trung, Who will be in charge of specialist knowledge, finance and sponsorship, communication and foreign relations. VFF’s general secretary and deputy-general secretary will be announced today.

In the meeting session yesterday, the new 23-member VFF executive board was also chosen, replacing the old board consisting of 39 members. With a fewer number of board members, it is hoped the board will restructure the VFF to make it more effective.

The meeting to vote on the new executive board and chairman is held once every five years to vote for the top positions of the sports federation in Viet Nam.

The meeting session welcomed Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan and general secretary of the Asian Football Federation (AFC) Alex Soosay.

Nhan highly appreciated Vietnamese football’s development in recent years both in advanced football and amateur football.

“Vietnamese football gained many achievements in the Southeast Asian region, and it contributed positively into the development of regional football.

“The country’s football is gradually professionalised. With amateur football, professionalism is indispensable,” he said.

Speaking at the meeting, Soosay confirmed that AFC is very satisfied with the progression of Viet Nam football including men and women’s football, futsal, youth football, and as well as training work for referees and coaches.

Soosay also thanked Viet Nam government’s support for its great interest in football.
