LookAtVietnam – Top sprinter Vu Thi Huong will run with Viet Nam’s support at the third Asian Indoor Games in Viet Nam from October 30 to November 8

Huong, who broke her own record in the women’s 100m at the National Championship in HCM City last month in 11.43secs, is aiming to finish under 11.40secs in the upcoming tournaments.

In an interview in HCM City, the 23-year-old sprinter said she was not surprised with her new record because she had previously recorded a time of 11.47sec during a training session in HCM City.

“I’ll train hard in order to break my new milestone of 11.40. I believe in myself and I often reach my goals after training hard,” Huong said.

“However, I need to improve my starting skills, which has been my Achilles’ heel.”

Although Huong has had success in the 100m and 200m events, she will run in the 60m race at the AIG in Ha Noi, which is a distance she has struggled with in the past.

“I prefer to run in the 100m and 200m, however I will challenge myself by running in the 60m at the Asian Indoor Games,” said Huong. “I only have a little time to train, but I will do my best to try to win for my country at the Asian Indoor Games,” she said.

Last year, the Thai Nguyen-born athlete failed to qualify for Olympic semi-finals after finishing eighth, with a time of 11.70sec in the women’s 100m quarter-finals in Beijing.

In 2007, she finished with a time of 11.33sec, a personal best, at the Asian Athletic Championships.

She was also the first Vietnamese female runner to win a gold medal at the SEA Games in the 100m race in the Philippines in 2005. At the 2007 SEA Games in Thailand, she brought home two more gold medals after winning the 100m and 200m events.

“Huong is a big athlete for big games. She rarely gets injured during training with the national team, and she is more focused at race time,” said the coach Nguyen Dinh Minh.

“I think she will do better at the Asian Indoor Games, which kicks off at the end of this month. I hope she runs well on the short track,” Minh added.
