Vietnam’s top striker Le Cong Vinh made his debut for the Leixoes at their 3-2 home win over Leiria in Portugal’s top-tier Liga Sagres league Sunday.

Vinh, the Vietnam Golden Ball winner in 2004, 2006 and 2007, played all 90 minutes and had two scoring chances but failed to convert.

It was the first time Vinh had been included in the starting line-up since he signed a four-month contract with Leixoes in August. Vinh had been a sub in previous matches against Porto and Guimarees but did not play.

Speaking after the match, Vinh said, “I am very happy to be useful. I have been training hard since I joined the club and I have been rewarded.

Coach Mota said Vinh had made lots of progress recently.

“I tried my best but unfortunately I missed two chances,” said Vinh. “The win and coach Jose Mota’s praise are very encouraging for me.”

However, Vinh, like any other player, needs more time to fit in at his new home, said Mota.
