Viet Nam women’s team will compete in the annual International Women’s Football Tournament, the Coal-Minerals Cup, in Quang Ninh province next week to warm up for the Southeast Asian Games.

The tournament will feature four teams, Thailand, Laos, Viet Nam and host Coal and Minerals, that will compete in a round-robin for the trophy at Cua Ong Stadium from October 16-23.

Last year, China’s Hubei beat the host 2-0 to win the championship and the VND50 million (US$3,000) cash-prize.

Students to kick off Nishu Cup

Over 600 students from 40 senior secondary schools in Ha Noi will compete in the Student Football tournament, the Nishu Cup, that kicks off at Long Bien Stadium on Sunday.

Teams, which are divided into eight groups, will compete in a round-robin tournament.

The final will be next month at Ha Dong Stadium.

It’s the ninth year in a row that the tournament has been held by Ha Noi-based newspaper, An Ninh Thu Do.

Thanh Hoa double gold count

Luu Thi Thanh and Nguyen Hai Thao, who played for Thanh Hoa, won a gold medal at the women’s doubles event at the Viet Nam Open, which wrapped up in Thanh Hoa.

The duo was awarded VND17 million (US$944), while Thailand cleaned up the men’s division.

Thanh Hoa team also bagged a gold medal in the regu event.

Tournament favourite, Thailand, took another gold in the men’s doubles event.

The tournament offered a record cash-prize of $10,800.
