LookAtVietnam – Defending champion and third-seeded Nguyen Hoang Thien cruised to the boys’ singles quarter-finals at the International Junior Tennis Championships

The 15-year-old broke serve in the first and seventh games to take a 5-1 lead before winning the service game to clinch the first set at 6-2.

Thien even had a better start in the second set after breaking serve in the first and third games to lead 4-0.

The Malaysian struggled to pull off a game before Thien won two games to seal the victory within 73 minutes.

Thien will take on eighth-seeded Danny Stanojevic of Sweden in the quarterfinal, who beat Thai player Nat Aroonsiriroj in straight sets 6-2, 6-4 in the second round.

All seeded players also made it to the quarter-final, but New Zealand sixth-seeded player Sloane Ryoma was shocked 6-3, 6-2 by unseeded Chinese Taipei player Jao Chi-Shan.

Under-18 tournament to open this weekend

Nguyen Hoang Thien is the No 1 seed at the Viet Nam U-18 Tennis Open – Techcombank Cup, which starts on Saturday at the Ha Noi’s Quan Hoa Club.
Thien is the former Asian U-14 champion.
Players from 17 countries and territories including Hong Kong, Australia, South Korea, Canada, Germany and India will be competing at the tournament.
On the girl’s side, 16-year-old Huynh Phuong Dai Trang of Viet Nam is the top seed.
The finals are scheduled on October 18.

In the boys’ doubles, Nguyen Hoang Thien and Ta Quoc Bao continued their impressive form by defeating Chinese Taipei pair Denny Stanojevic and Stefan Lindmark in straight sets 6-0, 7-5 to enter the semifinal.

All seeded duos also advanced to the semifinal but top-seeded Thai pair Kong pop Lertchai and Kittibodee Singil were stunned by pair Krittin Koaykul and Dang Ngoc Vinh.

The girls’ singles player, Huynh Phuong Dai Trang, is the only local tennis player who has made an appearance in the quarterfinals, after a 6-2, 6-0 win over Indonesian Efriliya Herlina.

Earlier fourth-seeded Tran Lam Anh was stunned by unseeded Thai Areeporn Wanichayapanich after three sets (6-3, 6-7, 6-2).

Nguyen Ai Ngoc Van lost to fifth-seeded Thai player Tiraganok while Do Dan Thi also was defeated by Indonesian eighth-seeded Dian Karina.
