Vietnamese badminton ace Nguyen Tien Minh has successfully defended his men’s singles title at the Yonex Sunrise Vietnam Open Grand Prix.

The world’s number seven and the tournament’s top seed defeated 58th-ranked Malaysian Chong Wei Feng 21-7, 19-21, 21-14 in the final at Phan Dinh Phung Sports Center in Ho Chi Minh City on Sunday.

Minh’s victory in his hometown secured his seventh position in the world rankings and earned him a cash prize of US$3,500 along with VND25 million ($1,400) from the sponsors.

In the women’s singles, world number 106 and eighth seed Le Ngoc Nguyen Nhung of Vietnam went down 1-2 to unseeded Tai Tzu Ying of Taiwan in the semifinals.

This year’s tournament with a prize pool of $50,000 drew more than 200 players from 14 countries and territories.
