Striker Quang Hai scored the only goal of the match to help Vietnam beat defending champions Turkmenistan at the Ho Chi Minh City Cup at Thong Nhat Stadium on Tuesday.

The national team did a particularly good job since they did not field their strongest team, with some key players playing for the U23 side in a friendly match with South Korean club Chunnam Dragons in Hanoi while others had flown to Syria with their club Binh Duong to play against Al Karamah in the second leg of the Asian Football Confederation Cup semifinals.

However, with many players who had earned Vietnam the ASEAN Football Federation Cup 2008 championship, the team was able to stay on equal terms with the visitors from the very beginning.

Temporarily replacing coach Henrique Calisto, who is in charge of the U23 team, assistant coach Le Huynh Duc had Dinh Luat in place of Viet Cuong in the defense and moved Cuong up to the midfield. Both fulfilled their tasks exceptionally well.

The other players like left winger Tan Tai, sweeper Minh Chau and central fullbacks Nhu Thanh and Minh Duc also did their jobs well with very few mistakes.

Captain Minh Phuong continued to prove himself as a reliable playmaker. Phuong made several wonderful passes and one of them helped Hai break the offside trap and beat Turkmen goal keeper Berdiyev 15 minutes after the break.

Speaking after the match, Duc said, “I’m very happy with the first win at the tournament. The players are still not in their best form but they played a good match. I hope we will continue to play well.”

Ater the win, the national team was awarded VND150 million by Vietnam Football Federation and VND50 million by HCMC Football Federation.

In other action, Singapore defeated a South Korean students’ team by a solitary goal.
