V-League club Dong Tam Long An (DTLA) has advanced to the semifinals of the Number One BTV Cup while reigning champs Da Nang has been dethroned.

Da Nang used all its best players in an effort to beat Duque de Caxias at the Go Dau Stadium to keep their hopes of advancing alive.

The Brazilian club used several substitutes because it had booked a berth in the semis after a 1-0 win over Ugandan club Kampalaka on Monday and a 3-0 victory over DTLA on Saturday.

However, V-League champions didn’t look as strong as Duque de Caxias, who had two goals in the first half before Da Nang could pull one back.

In the other Group B match, DTLA upset Kampalaka 1-0 to finish the group stage in second with four points.

It was a big surprise for fans because DTLA was considered the underdog against Kampalaka, who has won eight Ugandan championships.

With three points from a 4-2 win over Da Nang on Saturday, Kampalaka just needed a draw to progress.

However, DTLA took the lead after five minutes when striker Antonio Carlos headed a Hoang Lam corner kick into Kampalaka’s net.

After conceding the goal, the African side launched relentless attacks toward the Mekong Delta club but failed to convert several clear chances.

In the semis on Friday November 27, DTLA will clash with Group A’s top-placed Hai Phong Cement while hosts Binh Duong will fight against Duque de Caxias for a berth in the finals on Sunday November 29.

The 10th edition of the international tournament, which is sponsored by the maker of Number One beverages, opened on Friday (Nov. 20) and will close next Sunday (Nov. 29).
